WELSH BAPTISM OF FIRE

Writer: davidbailey9davidbailey9

The 38th Division, made up of Welsh battalions had their first major action on the Some in July 1916 at Mametz Wood, like most of that battle it was a hard and bloody affair with great losses. More than 4,000 men were killed or wounded over a few days, they did not take part in a massed attack again until July the following year. One of those killed was from Treorchy, (Rhondda) Glam. Corporal John Morgan Davies was killed in action in the wood on 11 July 1916. He was 19 years old, and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. One hundred years after his death someone left this at the impressive memorial to the Welsh 38th Division which looks toward Mametz Wood.
